Therapy for Trauma and PTSD

How do I know if I have trauma?

What happened to me isn’t even that bad compared to other people I know. Maybe I’m just being dramatic.

These are things that we often hear from our clients. Except they often aren’t being dramatic, rather they have experienced distressing events (or trauma) that is now interfering with their relationships with others, their sleep or appetite, their job or academic performance, or even being able to experience positive emotions.

Some symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) include:

  • Intrusive memories, such as flashbacks, nightmares, or unwanted traumatic memories popping into your head

  • Attempting to avoid talking about or thinking about the traumatic event

  • Avoiding places, people, events that could remind you of the traumatic event

  • Negative thoughts about yourself, others, or the world

  • Feelings of hopelessness about your future

  • Problems remembering things, especially about the traumatic event

  • Difficulty keeping close relationships

  • Feeling disconnected from family and friends

  • Feeling disinterested in activities you used to enjoy

  • Problems experiencing joy or other positive emotions

  • Feeling emotionally numb

  • Easily startled

  • Always on guard or scanning your environment for danger

  • Problems with sleep

  • Difficulty concentrating

  • Overwhelming feelings of guilt or shame

  • Angry outbursts or extreme irritability

  • Self-destructive behavior such as drinking too much or driving too fast

  • Suicidal thoughts

What Can I Expect from Trauma Counseling in Perry, Georgia?

You will begin with an assessment with one of our trauma therapists to determine which symptoms are causing you the most distress. Then you both will come up with a plan or roadmap to work toward feeling better. Your therapist may use a treatment modality such as EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, or TF-CBT (Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) to help you reach your goals. You will learn valuable skills such as coping strategies, identifying and correcting unhelpful thoughts, and stress management techniques.

Although it may seem scary to face these uncomfortable emotions, your trauma counselor will be with you every step of the way.

You don’t have to “live” by avoiding places, people, or memories. Counseling can help you to return to the life you once had before the trauma occurred, but with the added wisdom of lived experience and coping strategies. Our Perry counseling office has knowledgeable clinicians who specialize in working with trauma and PTSD. To start your counseling journey, follow these simple steps:

  1. Contact Lyons Center LLC.

  2. Meet with one of our expert counselors.

  3. Get out of the past and start joyfully living in the present.
